The Fire Service was called to a large fire in the Glenpark Ave, Mornington, house at 4.30am.
The fire was being treated as suspicious because it started in the basement of the house, while no-one was home, Detective Constable Simon Forde said.
The elderly occupant was away for the night, he said.
