Opoho Rd bus loop not part of redevelopment

The Opoho Rd bus loop will not be a part of a redevelopment of the Dunedin Botanic Garden - and that's official.

Opoho residents' concern about the issue prompted the Dunedin City Council this week to put it in writing, with the community development committee voting for a motion that confirmed the council had not included it in the redevelopment.

The $5 million Dunedin Botanic Garden Strategic Development Plan was launched in late 2006, and at that time, included the closure of the Opoho Rd bus loop and the realignment of Lovelock Ave.

While the Lovelock Ave realignment - part of the $5 million initiative of the Friends of the Dunedin Botanic Garden that would add 6000sq m to the garden - is going ahead, the closure of the bus loop had never been agreed to by the council, committee chairman Cr Paul Hudson said.

Former friends of the garden president Jayson Kelly said that organisation had dropped the idea of the bus loop's closure last year after consultation.
