Quiz night planned at museum

Lovers of slightly curly questions will find plenty to enjoy and, occasionally, scratch their heads over, in a big team quiz planned for the Otago Museum on May 17.

Teams of up to six people will take part in "The Ultimate ODT Quiz", which will start at the museum cafe at 7pm.

Participants in the quiz, which is jointly organised by the Otago Museum and the Otago Daily Times, will face 70 questions, over seven rounds.

The event is linked to Focal Point, a popular exhibition of historic ODT photographs spanning the newspaper's first 150 years, which has already attracted more than 55,000 visits since opening in mid-November.

It runs until June 17.

"Join us, together with the Otago Daily Times for an evening of fun, competition and prizes as we look back on what has made the news," museum marketing co-ordinator and quizmaster Juliet Pierce urged.

Participants were invited to "test your knowledge of the last 150 years in Otago" with a "special quiz" which would challenge even the most quick-thinking Otagoite, she said.

Children's quizzes are often held at the museum during school holidays, but this is believed to be the first quiz for adults held at the museum for several years, and organisers expect some lively competitive pressures to surface.

Four of the contest rounds will focus on the Focal Point exhibition itself, and on Otago in general, with questions linked to front pages featured in the museum show, as well as sports, famous faces, general knowledge and April Fool's Day spoofs.

The other three rounds will include questions from the ODT's own daily quizzes.

Participants are required to book by contacting the museum information desk (phone 474-7474). Each team pays $15, which includes some "nibbles" from the museum cafe.

Otago Museum organisers have been finding that exhibitions where visitors can become "part of the action" are proving among the most popular.

"We've seen that people like to be involved and they like to be doing stuff," Ms Pierce said.
