SDHB to consult on diabetic health service strategy

The Southern District Health Board is to consult the public on a diabetes strategy that will guide health services for diatics for the next decade.

The "Get Checked" diabetes programme ends in June, having been discontinued by Health Minister Tony Ryall following concerns raised about its effectiveness.

DHBs were asked to work with local health organisations to establish new programmes tailored to each area.

Yesterday, the Southern DHB announced it would consult the public next week on its strategy, developed in conjunction with Southern Primary Health Organisation and Diabetes Otago.

Drop-in forums will be held in Dunedin, Palmerston, Oamaru, Cromwell, Queenstown, Te Anau, Lumsden, Invercargill, Gore, and Balclutha.

Last week, DHB chief executive Carole Heatly told board members at their meeting in Invercargill that the DHB was on target to implement its diabetes strategy on July 1.
