Power outages hit city again

Businesses and shoppers were left in the dark for the second time in 12 days when another power outage hit the Dunedin CBD.

The same businesses hit by an outage on May 14 were affected when power went out at 1.40pm today.

The Meridian and Golden Centre mall complex, and other businesses in the city's CBD were in the dark for about an hour before power was restored.

Delta are investigating the cause of the outage, which Delta project manager David Paterson said they assumed was caused by someone digging around the same cable cut by contractors installing fibre broadband in York Pl on May 14.

On that occasion power went out to 1524 consumers for just over an hour.

On Friday, Delta said it was "significantly concerned" for the public safety following that outage and another on April 30 when another contractor struck a power cable near Arana Hall, cutting power to more than 700 consumers, including parts of Otago University and the CBD.

Chorus general manager of network build Chris Dyhrberg apologised on Friday for the disruption caused by those two outages, and said the company needed to "do better".
