Fire-damaged home open as lesson to public

A fire-damaged Mosgiel home is being opened to the public in an effort to educate residents about the dangers and effects of fire.

On Sunday, from 10am to 2pm, members of the Fire Service will guide people through 3 Murray St, which was damaged by fire last week.

It will be a chance for people to experience the aftermath of a house fire, taking in the sights and smells.

The Murray St blaze began in a bedroom and was not considered suspicious.

Fire officers will point out significant points of interest in the house relating to the fire, how it began, how it spread and how it could have been prevented or its effect minimised.

Fire open homes are staged throughout New Zealand at damaged properties deemed safe to enter.
