It is little wonder the song performed by the overall winner of the senior New Zealand Gold Guitar awards in Gore had emotional impact.

That is because Dunedin singer Kylie Price dedicated her original song A Man I Know to her father, Graeme.

Before singing in the New Zealand original composition section, Miss Price (18) told the audience on Sunday night her song was dedicated to her father, who was diagnosed with cancer last year.

She wrote it while her father was in hospital to tell him some important things she had been unable to say in person. The lyrics are reproduced below.

Mr Price told the Otago Daily Times he cried when he heard his daughter perform the song for the first time on Sunday morning.

"I'm very, very proud, after everything we've been through. It's been an emotional time."

Miss Price said she was shocked to come away with the top title.

"It's so weird. I watch it [the Gold Guitars] every year. Last year when I saw Vickie [Evans] win, I thought it would be awesome if that was me up there."

She said her father was the inspiration behind several of her songs, with some having received awards.

"He likes that most of my winning songs are about him," she laughed.

As well as winning the overall award at the weekend, she also won the gospel, country rock, traditional and New Zealand composition sections.

Miss Price, who studies music and English at the University of Otago, started playing guitar when she was 7 and began singing lessons at 11.

She is no stranger to Gold Guitar fame after winning four sections and being named overall winner of the intermediate section two years ago. She also performed in the Otago Daily Times Big Night In community concert at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in November, and has won numerous other awards and competitions.

More than 1200 people filled the Gore Town and Country Club for the senior finals on Sunday night, watching 40 performances from 11 sections.

Category winners were: female vocal solo, Jayne Evans (Dunedin); male vocal solo, Matthew McNeilly (Blenheim); gospel, Kylie Price; country rock, Kylie Price; duet, Craig and Cheryl (Invercargill); instrumental, the Mitis (Porirua); traditional, Kylie Price; New Zealand composition, Kylie Price; open vocal group, the Mitis; open group, State Highway One (Nelson); open yodelling, Hannah Cosgrove (Hamilton); highest-scoring Gore Country Music Club senior member, Cavell Clearwater; overall runner-up, State Highway One.

A Man I Know

(v1)
Whisper to me..
All your secrets untold.. I'll keep them safe..
Treat them as my own..

We both know you have some worries on your mind..
but I'm not going anywhere tonight..

(v2)
In case you break..
you cannot fight no more..
when you need to be saved,
I'll become the saviour..

(Chorus)
Give me all your pain, your soul hell has stained..
I'll fight every minute so you don't have to.
Cause you're more,
than just a man I know..

(v3)
I talked to God-
He said you've still got time..
so close your eyes..
but don't cross the line..

(Chorus)
Give me all your pain, your soul hell has stained..
I'll fight every minute so you don't have to.
Cause you're more,
than just a man I know..

(Bridge)
I walk into the room, you see me, I see you..
Oh how I hope you know..

(Chorus)
Give me all your pain, your soul hell has stained..
I'll fight every minute so you don't have to.
Cause you're more,
than just a man I know..
