South has new diabetes programme

A replacement for the diabetes Get Checked programme is operating in the South, although it is yet to be officially signed off, Southern Primary Health Organisation chief executive Ian Macara says.

The national Get Checked programme, which included a free annual check, ended last month.

Each area had to come up with its own programme, and this had been a "good news story" in the South, where implementation was happening smoothly, PHO clinical lead Dr Hywel Lloyd said.

Diabetes management had changed from a "one size fits all" national approach, whereby every diabetic got a free annual check.

The southern programme encouraged greater oversight of higher-needs diabetics, and a more hands-off approach for others.

The programme gave GP practices flexibility in how they managed funds for diabetes management.

The plan would be signed off by Southern DHB once minor issues were ironed out.

A special focus of the first year of the programme was blood-sugar control.
