High flu-like illness rate

Otago and Southland recorded the third-highest rate of flu-like illness presentations in New Zealand last week, an ESR flu update shows.

Of the 19 participating district health boards, Southern was third highest, recording about 180 consultations per 100,000 people in the week ending July 29.

The national average was 125.2.

Higher than Southern was flu-hit Canterbury, but the Waitemata health board recorded the highest rate.

This flu season, Southern has had only about 20 flu virus cases confirmed, compared with nearly 700 in Canterbury.

A DHB spokeswoman said eight people had been admitted to Dunedin Hospital with flu-like illness.
