Ladies and gentlemen start your engines. The big-air specialists of Nitro Circus Live are coming to Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Dunedin Venues Management Ltd chief executive David Davies confirmed the worldwide touring event would perform at the venue on Friday, January 25.

The event features some of the world's top freestyle motocross, BMX and skateboard daredevils, and music, lights and pyrotechnics are all part of the entertainment.

Mr Davies said he was pleased the venue was part of the tour. Dunedin is the first stop on a New Zealand tour that will include Christchurch, Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington.

The event follows earlier announcements of the International Rodeo (November 17), and the Equestrian Extravaganza (February 1).

"It points to the flexibility of use, and we are chuffed to bits to be on the circuit."

A crowd of more than 20,000 was expected based on the circus' inaugural performance in Carisbrook last year, "and at least we can guarantee it will be held in perfect conditions".

There was no concern about the big-air exponents being pushed for space in the enclosed stadium. However, the logistics of moving tonnes of soil in and out of the venue while protecting the turf would pose a challenge.

"But the rodeo would be a good practice for us."

Mr Davies said he was pleased to see the stadium attracting more events, and "we knew it would take some time".

"From our perspective, it is all good signs."

Mr Davies said until contracts were signed, no further events would be announced, but "loads" more were possible.
