Booze bus tests 6000; 8 charged

A dozen people are to appear in court this week after being processed for drink-driving in Dunedin at the weekend.

Police had a booze bus in the city on Friday and Saturday, when officers manned several checkpoints.

More than 6000 drivers were breath-tested, of which eight were processed for drink-driving.

Of those eight, five were from Dunedin and the others from Auckland, Timaru and Waihola.

Half of them had previous convictions for drink-driving.

An additional four drivers were processed for drink-driving in Dunedin over the weekend as a result of separate incidents.

Acting road policing manager Senior Sergeant Steve Larking said a large number of drivers stopped at checkpoints were also issued infringement notices for breaching conditions of their driver's licence.

Young drivers in particular, on graduated driving licences, were caught in breach, he said.

"That's really disappointing," he said.

• A male spectator at the All Blacks rugby test against the Springboks on Saturday was among those removed from Forsyth Barr Stadium for offensive or disorderly behaviour.

The man allegedly urinated into a cup while in the stands, Acting Senior Sergeant Ed Baker said.

The man was arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour.

Acting Snr Sgt Baker said a few people were ejected from the stadium during the game, mainly for being intoxicated.
