Former prime minister Helen Clark will deliver the first in a series of annual lectures when she visits Dunedin next month.

The long-time Labour leader was asked to give the inaugural Dame Dorothy Fraser Lecture, which has been established to celebrate the involvement of women in the Labour Party and its association with the electorate of Dunedin South.

Miss Clark, administrator of the United Nations Development Programme since 2009, will talk on the theme of poverty and inequality at the Mayfair Theatre on November 14.

The series was named after Dunedin Labour stalwart Dame Dorothy Fraser, in recognition of her contribution to the party, Labour's Dunedin South MP Clare Curran said.

Dame Dorothy had achieved a lot for politics and for Dunedin, Ms Curran said.

Her late husband Bill represented Labour in the old St Kilda electorate for 24 years, and she spent 29 years on the Otago Hospital Board - 12 as chairwoman.

Miss Clark's free lecture from 8pm to 9.30pm was open to the public.

Tickets to a pre-function drinks and nibbles event from 6.45pm were available through Ms Curran's electorate office.

Miss Clark last visited Otago in August 2011 when she attended an Oamaru function to help the people of Haiti.
