It was an unhappy hour for a Dunedin publican this week when a person drove through the wall of his Caversham tavern.

Yesterday, builders were busy rebuilding a wall of Mitchell's Tavern after it had been damaged in an alleged hit and run the previous day.

Publican Bryan Morris told the Otago Daily Times it appeared "a driver hit [the building], wandered around their car for a while, backed away and then took off".

Mr Morris, who was not at the South Rd tavern at the time of the incident, said the repair bill would "not be cheap".
