Tannery site readied for building of storage

The $5 million warehouse development by Port Otago on the former Glendermid Leathers tannery site at Sawyers Bay is on target.

Port Otago chief executive Geoff Plunket said the construction of a storage and distribution warehouse, as a storage and distribution hub close to the port was going to plan.

The site had been contaminated from a century of use as a tannery, but the port knew of that before buying the land, he said.

In 2009, an Otago Regional Council report said the tannery at Sawyers Bay was contaminated with elevated metal levels detected in soil samples.

There were two distinct stages of the planned development, he said.

Fulton Hogan would finish preparing the site in late January and Calder Stewart would complete building the warehouse, at the rear of the site, in mid June next year, he said.

The redevelopment also included a landscaping plan, he said.
