Work to replace a faulty Macandrew Bay water main will begin
on Monday.
The Dunedin City Council decided to replace the existing
water main because it had broken numerous times, causing
water restrictions for the community.
The council plans to lay the first section of the new main
before Christmas.
Work will start on Portobello Rd opposite Greenacres St,
progress through the Macandrew Bay Beach Reserve car park and
continue along Portobello Rd to the junction with Marion St.
From December 3 to 14, vehicle access to the beach reserve
car park will be restricted although pedestrian access will
remain.
The car park will be open to vehicles at weekends if
possible.
Traffic control will be in place along Portobello Rd, which
could cause minor delays.
DCC engineering project manager Camilla Bennett said the car
park and Portobello Rd area would be left untouched between
December 20 and February 1 to minimise disruption during the
holiday period.
Work on the second section of the water pipe, on Marion St
and Hellyer St, would start on January 14, she said.
The council will send letters to those directly affected
before work commencing.
If temporary water shutdowns are necessary, affected
residents will be notified.
Work is expected to be completed by the end of February.
