It might have snowed on the morning they married in
December 60 years ago, but it certainly did not bode ill for
Ron and Aileen McGregor.
''You get over it,'' Mr. McGregor (79) said of the snow.
The couple married on December 20, 1952, at Mornington
Sixty years on, the couple celebrated early with many of
their four children, 10 grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren at an afternoon tea on Saturday at
Forsyth Barr Stadium.
''It was absolutely marvellous, a glorious day from the start
to finish,'' Mr. McGregor said.
Memories of their meeting on a train to Christchurch for a
work sports trip were fresh.
''I thought he was a bear with a sore head and didn't like
him very much,'' she said.
That started to change after Mr McGregor (81) asked her to
dance that night and it ''progressed from there''.
Looking back over the years, it was a bit of tolerance and
patience that had seen them through, she said.
''As long as I did as I was told,'' Mr McGregor joked.
He described the past 60 years as a ''very interesting trip,
very worthwhile'' thanks to family and friends who had been
part of their lives.
''It's turned out all right.
"As for what they will do on the 20th, he said they would
just ''have to make our own fun''.
