Ten people were arrested in the Southern police district
during the weekend's transtasman operation targeting
alcohol-related offences.
Five reported assaults, five liquor licensing breaches and a
dozen drink-driving offences were reported.
Police on both sides of the Tasman took part in the sixth
Operation Unite, which was conducted from Friday night to
Sunday.
Nationally, the operation resulted in 448 arrests, 170
reported assaults, 135 licence breaches and 364 drink-drive
offences.
By comparison, during last year's operation, there were 340
arrests, 94 assaults, 63 licence breaches and 373 drink-drive
offences.
Southern district road policing manager Inspector Andrew
Burns said more than 100 staff worked on the operation across
the district at the weekend.
The result was ''probably a stock standard weekend for us at
this time of the year'', he said.
Police would continue targeting alcohol-related offending,
including drink-driving and drunken behaviour, before
Christmas.
