Cancer Society Otago Southland chief executive officer Mike Kernaghan welcomes children, parents and council officials to St Clair Park for the unveiling of a new smoke-free park sign.

The sign asks parents not to smoke in the playground, and is one of about 20 which will be placed in the city's 113 playgrounds in the coming weeks. Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull said eventually it was hoped signs would be erected in all the city's playgrounds.

''The aim is not to have an unfortunate example set for children in these spaces.''
