Waves crash on the road at Dunedin's St Clair Esplanade today as a polar blast moves up the country.

MetService has lifted its heavy snow warning for eastern Otago, but snow and rain showers are likely during the next 48 hours.

The wintry blast that is hitting the country has led to road closures and other disruptions for travellers.

A drain in central Dunedin sprays water over the road about 10am this morning.
