A man tasered after he barricaded himself in a room and
threatened self-harm is unlikely to face any charges, police
say.
Police were called to a High St home about 6.40pm yesterday
after the 46-year-old man threatened self-harm with a knife.
Attempts by three officers at the scene to negotiate with the
man to leave the room were unsuccessful.
Acting Senior Sergeant Chris George said police entered the
room and "it became apparent the man intended seriously
harming himself and a Taser was used to defuse the
situation".
Ambulance and police officers provided first aid before the
man was taken to emergency psychiatric services at Dunedin
Hospital.
Mr George said the man remained there in psychiatric care
this morning.
He said it was police policy that all Taser incidences were
reviewed.
