The Dunedin City Council is to go over the options for a pine
plantation next to Waikouaiti Beach at a community board
meeting today, after locals took umbrage over a plan to fell
the trees.
At a meeting last November to discuss a plan to fell the
trees, residents expressed concern it would leave them
vulnerable to coastal erosion and being battered by wind and
sand.
Since then, the council had taken into account these concerns
and, at the Waikouaiti Community Board meeting in the
Karitane Hall, parks manager Lisa Wheeler will go over
options.
The options were to leave the trees alone, proceed with the
plan to fell them and replace them with natives - as long as
the community's concerns could be mitigated - cut the trees
down over a longer period of time, or deal only with the
trees posing a risk to water and waste infrastructure.
Ms Wheeler said the council had yet to settle on a favoured
option and work would not begin until the community board
approved.
After today's meeting, which starts at 5.30pm, the council
would bring a formal report back to the community board at
its next meeting and also arrange a public meeting to discuss
its plans.
