A decision on how to reconfigure a Dunedin intersection where
a cyclist was killed in November 2011 could be made in the
next few months.
There has been a temporary arrangement in place at the
intersection of Anzac Ave and Castle St since cyclist Peter
Wells was killed in a collision with a truck in November
2011.
The temporary arrangement has a third through-lane on Castle
St, between Anzac Ave and Stuart St, closed to traffic.
The proposal is to formalise the temporary layout, turning
the closed lane into a wider cycle lane and also a new
footpath, which will allow pedestrians to follow Anzac Ave
and continue around the station gardens to the traffic
signals at Stuart St.
Simon Underwood, from the New Zealand Transport Agency, said
the proposal, which includes measures that could potentially
limit the use of Anzac Ave by through traffic, was being
discussed with key businesses in the lower section of Anzac
Ave.
Once consultation was concluded, the agency expected to
provide a report for their consideration to the Dunedin City
Council infrastructure services committee's March meeting.
