Paul Simon fans were greeted by the sound of silence at Dunedin's Regent Theatre yesterday. Just 10 people were lined up in a queue when tickets for the April 6 concert at Forsyth Barr Stadium went on sale at 9am.

''I came here expecting to see a queue right around the corner,'' long-time fan Maggie Hanton, of Dunedin, said.

''I've been a big fan since the late '60s. When he and Art Garfunkel split up, my husband followed Paul Simon and I followed Art Garfunkel.

''We're both also fans of [support act] Rufus Wainwright, so it's a double whammy for us. I'm really looking forward to it - very, very much so.''

The 71-year-old singer-songwriter's fanbase is as diverse as his back catalogue, judging by the fans queued for tickets in Dunedin yesterday.

''I've been a fan ever since I was born. Mum's a huge fan, so I've grown up with him,'' 19-year-old University of Otago student Georgia Rose said.

''I've been listening to him my whole life. The Only Living Boy In New York is my favourite song of all time. I might have a wee cry when he plays that,'' she said.

Other music fans were pleased to see another big act performing at the stadium.

''I've been a fan for years. I love his voice and just the way he moves,'' Joanna Stevenson, of Dunedin, said.

''I can't wait. We went to Elton [John] and the Hollies. We had good seats both times and had no problems at all with the sound.

''It's a lovely stadium. You can go in all weathers, so it doesn't matter if it rains or snows.''
