Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull encourages Leala Akiyama (4) and her sister Lucia (1) to give the Blue Bear a hug for Plunket. The photo opportunity was to raise awareness of Plunket's Bear Hug Appeal, which starts on March 4.

''A hug is a sign of love and appreciation so we're hoping Kiwis will help us to continue to provide support to local families when they need it by supporting our March Bear Hug Appeal,'' Otago appeal co-ordinator Kelly Mansell said.

She encouraged people to give Plunket ''a hug'' by donating money or time or sharing their skills and experience.
