Grants Braes School pupil Sophie Cosgrove (5) takes part
in a scooter obstacle course at the school this week.
The event was part of Walk 'n Wheel to School Week (March
4-8) in which more than 8000 pupils from 48 schools across
Dunedin were encouraged to walk, cycle, skate or scoot to
school.
Sport Otago community schools adviser Kerri Bush said using
active transport to and from school had many benefits for
pupils as well as the wider community.
''When kids are having fun with their friends and family,
unwittingly they are improving their health and fitness,
while learning and utilising their road-safety skills,'' she
said.
''Increasing the visibility of children by reducing
congestion at the school gate will increase the safety of our
children, and will reduce the stress of parents trying to
find that pole position at the school.''
