Otakou marae kaumatua Mori Pickering died in Dunedin on
Saturday at the age of 103.
Mrs Pickering (nee Ellison) was born at Otakou in 1909 and
was of Ngai Tahu and Te Atiawa descent.
A noted soprano, Mrs Pickering joined the Methodist Maori
Choir in 1927, which toured New Zealand, Australia and Great
Britain. The choir attended a reception at Buckingham Palace.
With her late husband, George, she helped in marae affairs,
assisted the wider Maori community, and was also noted for
her community work.
Her tangi will be held tomorrow at Otakou marae and she will
be interred in the Otakou urupa.
