Many feet make light work.
Running 1000km may sound daunting, but Kaikorai Valley
College pupils had the right idea yesterday when 600 of them
ran 1.5km each to produce a grand total of 1000km.
The event was part of the Kaikorai Valley College 1000km
Challenge and Sport Expo, which encourages pupils to get
involved in sport-related activity.
Apart from the 1000km run, which started the day, pupils were
given a chance to try sporting activities such as table
tennis, rock climbing and martial arts.
Twenty-four sporting activities were on offer. Co-ordinator
Neil Mackenzie said the event was established four years ago
and 41% of the participants went on to join a sporting
organisation.
That number had now increased to 51%, he said.
''We've managed to draw a lot more into ongoing activity.''
The event continues today, with more than 400 primary school
pupils from the college's catchment area also having an
opportunity to try some of the sporting activities at the
expo.
