Bayfield High School pupils have performed at the Dunedin Chinese Garden to prepare for a trip to China.

Performing arts teacher Philippa Hosken said 29 Bayfield year 10 to 13 pupils would travel to China on April 17.

The pupils were performers in a kapa haka group, jazz band and choir, Ms Hosken said.

The performance to about 60 people on Sunday was to prepare the pupils for different aspects of Chinese culture, she said.

During the 11-day trip the pupils would perform at a ''big cultural festival'' at Bayfield's sister school, Hengshui High School, in Hengshui, about three hours south of Beijing, Ms Hosken said.

The pupils would be accompanied by nine adults, including three school staff members. Principal Judith Forbes said the performances of jazz, kapa haka and choir at the Chinese Garden was a ''contrast of cultures''.

Mrs Forbes said 30 of the 70 international pupils at Bayfield were from Hengshui High School.

A free ''farewell concert'' would be held at the school on Thursday at 7pm.
