Library news welcomed

Dunedin still needs its long-awaited library to help revitalise the suburb, Dunedin city councillors have been reminded.

The prod came from Paul Allen, of South Dunedin Voice, who yesterday told councillors he was pleased to see the council had $9 million budgeted for the project in 2016-17 and 2018-19.

He urged councillors not to let that commitment slide, saying the library would be a community hub that would attract people and help efforts to revitalise South Dunedin.

It could even include space for a digital office with computer suites, space for community organisations and a cafe.

''It's more than just a place with a collection of books that people can borrow.

"It's about the community having a central focus and a place to gather and the spin-offs that has for the community.''
