Council will adjourn for Cleveland funeral

Monday's Dunedin City Council meeting will start and adjourn earlier to accommodate the funeral of Dunedin philanthropist and businessman Les Cleveland.

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull yesterday said ''with great sadness'' the council heard of Mr Cleveland's death on Wednesday.

''Les made a tremendous contribution to the wider city and will be particularly remembered for his generosity, dedication and humour. He held many roles over the years, including as an Otago Regional councillor, and played a major part in many city beautification projects.''

Monday's meeting will start at noon not 1pm, adjourning at 1.30pm, to enable councillors and staff to attend the funeral. If required, the meeting could be reconvened no later than 4pm.
