Shanghai exhibition soon

After a year of planning, another big cultural exhibition from Dunedin's Chinese sister city, Shanghai, will open at the Otago Museum early next month.

Developed by the Shanghai Museum, the show, titled ''China's Cultural Minorities: Silk to Silver'', provides insights into the rich and colourful cultures that make up Chinese society, Otago Museum officials say.

The show, which opens on July 6, features 70 artefacts, including traditional costumes, jewellery, ornaments, religious articles and masks.

They will be displayed in four main sections: costumes, traditional ornaments, objects of daily life and religious articles, and illustrate the diversity between different minority groups, and also reflect distinctive styles, patterns, materials and techniques. Among the exhibits are a woman's jacket, trousers, gloves and shoes crafted from salmon skin, and an elaborate silver-twisted neck ring worn by Miao women to reflect beauty and wealth.

The free exhibition will run at the museum's special exhibitions gallery until October 28.
