Dunedin motorists face months of closure on Upper Junction Road near Sawyers Bay after a significant landslip overnight.

The landslip trapped a woman inside her home and brought a tree down on her car.

Dunedin City Council Roading Maintenance Engineer Peter Standring said the slip occurred about 100m from the intersection of Upper Junction Road and Blanket Bay Road.

Fire Service southern communications shift manager Riwai Grace said emergency services had trouble reaching the home because the slip had also blocked the entrance to the property.

"She wasn't injured, she just couldn't get out. A slip went into her house [and] she couldn't get out," Mr Grace said.

"She was trapped in the house because the slip had basically blocked off exit points.

"Her car was also squashed by a tree."

Mr Standring said part of the hillside from the top side of Upper Junction Road fell on to the road and continued down on to the property below.

While the affected part of Blanket Bay Road would be able to be cleared quickly, the Upper Junction Road damage was very significant and would mean "months of closure to through traffic", he said.
