Visitor drop for museum

Although Otago Museum's annual visitor numbers have dipped slightly, director Dr Ian Griffin says they show the museum has not been adversely affected by the redeveloped Toitu Otago Settlers Museum.

The Otago Museum attracted 464,670 visits in the financial year to the end of last month, down 3.3% from 480,887 the previous financial year.

Dr Griffin said the Toitu museum was also a ''great'' institution, which, in its redeveloped form, had become a ''whole new attraction'' in the city.

It was also ''highly encouraging'' for the Otago Museum that its own visitor numbers had remained ''pretty stable'', despite the advent of another high-profile attraction.

The attendance figures showed there was scope for several successful museums and other cultural institutions in the city.
