Ultrasound waiting times to be a focus

The Southern District Health Board says it can focus on reducing waiting times for ultrasound, because CT and MRI waiting times are coming under control.

Patients were waiting 23 to 26 weeks for a routine ultrasound in Dunedin. In Invercargill, patients were waiting 10 weeks, which was inside the 12-week target.

Support services medical director Dr Marion Poore said in a statement last week waiting times for urgent ultrasound were within target on both sites.

''We acknowledged that there is work to do in this area, and we are preparing for this now that the waiting times for CT and MRI are reducing.''

Recently, the board said routine waiting times for MRI and CT were reducing and should be within 12 weeks by the end of this month.

To achieve that, Dunedin Hospital scanners were working overtime.
