Driver hits truck while over taking

An 89-year-old Mosgiel man is in hospital after crashing into a truck and trailer during an overtaking manoeuvre.

The man was driving his Toyota IQ along the Gordon Rd extension on Thursday afternoon when he attempted to overtake a transporter truck with a large bulldozer on its deck, Acting Sergeant Steve Griffiths said.

''During his overtaking manoeuvre, he has gone off the tarseal and gone over a small driveway and then hit a small bridge.''

The car then collided with the front wheel of the truck, resulting in significant damage to both vehicles.

The elderly driver was taken to Dunedin Hospital with moderate injuries, while the driver of the Balclutha truck was in a state of shock, he said.
