Witnesses sought after Dunedin city assault

Dunedin police are calling for witnesses to a serious assault which occurred on the corner of Bath and Lower Stuart streets during the weekend.

The incident occurred at around 3am on Saturday, when a 39-year-old man and his female partner were walking along Lower Stuart St, towards the Octagon.

The man was approached from behind, assaulted, and knocked unconscious.
He sustained a fractured skull in the incident.

Passers-by stopped and tended to him before he was taken to hospital by ambulance.

He is currently recuperating at home.

The victim's partner chased two men thought to be involved in the incident down Bath Street but they ran off in separate directions along George St.

Police are still working to determine whether the offenders were known to the victim and whether CCTV footage of the incident is available.

Police would like to speak with the people who assisted the victim or with anyone else who saw the alleged assault occur.

Anyone with any information should call Detective Jo McLaughlan, of Dunedin, on 471-4800 or provide information anonymously to the Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.
