Dunedin man's skull fractured in assault

Dunedin police are calling for witnesses to a serious assault in which a 39-year-old man was knocked unconscious.

The man was walking along lower Stuart St with his female partner about 3am on October 5 when he was attacked, Detective Jo McLaughlan said.

The pair were walking towards the Octagon and the incident happened on the corner of Bath St.

Det McLaughlan said the man's skull was fractured in the assault.

''Some passers-by stopped and tended to him before he was taken to hospital by ambulance. He is currently recuperating at home.''

The victim's partner chased two men thought to be involved in the incident down Bath St, but they ran off in separate directions along George St, Det McLaughlan said.

Police were trying to determine whether the alleged offenders were known to the victim and whether or not the incident was captured on CCTV footage.

They particularly wanted to speak to those who assisted the victim, as well as anyone who saw the incident.

• Det McLaughlan can be contacted at the Dunedin Central Police Station on (03) 471-4800, and information can be provided anonymously to police via the Crimestoppers line 0800 555-111.
