Central Dunedin is open for business again after a
ruptured gas main in Albion Lane led to evacuations this
Police say all premises in the affected central George St
block have now re-opened and traffic is flowing normally.
A cordon remains in place in a small area of Albion Lane as a
precaution and the area continues to be monitored.
But police say there is no longer any threat to members of
the public or workers in the area after firefighters
dissipated gas residues.
Earlier, emergency services evacuated McDonald's in George St
and nearby shops when a worker on a digger ruptured the gas
main about 8.45am.
Cordons were in place including around the Harvest Court Mall
and police asked the public to avoid the area.
