Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull yesterday confirmed there had been ''broad interest'' from candidates within New Zealand and internationally vying to replace outgoing chief executive Paul Orders.
Mr Cull could not say how many applications had been received by last Friday's deadline, but said the new council would have ''plenty to choose from''.
The recruitment drive was being conducted for the council by Christchurch-based firm EQI Global, but staff there declined to comment yesterday.
A shortlist would be presented to the full council to consider, and it was hoped a new chief executive would be selected before the end of the year.
