A car with some serious pulling power arrived in Dunedin on
The Duesenberg Le Baron-bodied Sports Phaeton was bought new
in 1934 by actress Carole Lombard, who was married to
Hollywood star Clark Gable.
It was brought to New Zealand from the United States in 2011,
by Robert and Lynette Duncan, of Wanaka, and restored to
''It's never too late to have a happy childhood,'' Mr Duncan
''I think of myself as the caretaker, not the owner. I'm just
looking after it until the next person gets it.''
It was the only Duesenberg in the southern hemisphere, he
''It's never got old. Look at the curves on the side of the
bonnet. It was made when craftsmen were cheap and technology
was expensive. Now, it's the other way around.''
The ''Deusey'' was one of more than 250 vehicles which
appeared at the 2013 Autospectacular at Dunedin's Edgar
Centre yesterday, organising committee chairman Kevin Casey
Motorcycles, go-karts, hot-rods, vintage cars, street rods
and military vehicles rubbed fenders with more unusual
models, such as a 1936 Auburn cabriolet, 1936 Cord
Westchester, a Plymouth Superbird, Lomax three-wheeler and an
electric car built by Otago Polytechnic students.
The event also featured trade stalls and swap sites.
