Renewing surface of highway

Sections of State Highway 1 through Dunedin are being resurfaced by the New Zealand Transport Agency.

The work was costing $360,000 and would replace road surface which had ''reached the end of its economic life'', the NZTA said.

The north and southbound legs of SH1 between Frederick and Albany Sts were being upgraded.

Site preparation work started this week.

Two traffic lanes would be open until Sunday, when the new road surface would start to be applied.

NZTA Otago and Southland highway manager Ian Duncan said contractors would work six nights a week between 6pm and 7am to minimise traffic disruptions, during which time only a single lane would be open to traffic.

''Road users can expect some delays,'' he said.

Once work on the northbound section of the highway was finished, work on the southbound section would start.

Weather permitting, the entire job was scheduled for completion by next Friday, Mr Duncan said.
