Container not linked to fraudster

A tip-off that a container may have been linked to the convicted fraudster Michael Swann sparked a fruitless police search yesterday.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Ferguson confirmed police visited the Momona and Taieri area yesterday morning.

That visit was prompted ''after receiving information that there was a container in the area that may have been linked to Michael Swann'', he said.

However, it was confirmed the container did not belong to Mr Swann, who spent four years and eight months in jail for his part in defrauding the former Otago District Health Board of $16.9 million.

Court documents released to the Otago Daily Times revealed Mr Swann denied owning a 1922 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost recovered from a Port Otago container yard this year.

Police are continuing to appeal for information concerning Mr Swann, and continue to follow up any tips from the public that may lead to the recovery of assets subject to a $6 million pecuniary order, he said.

People with information were urged to contact Dunedin police on (03) 471-4800, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.
