Dunedin police are seeking information about an apparent
arson at a plantation near Whare Flat late last month.
The fire in McLaughlin Rd, off Whare Flat Rd, was reported by
a member of the public at 4.30pm on Saturday, November 30.
McLaughlins Rd is closed to the public except for
pedestrians, motorcyclists and mountain bikers. The fire was
burning about 800m in from a locked road gate and was in a
City Forest plantation area.
The Fire Service and Rural Fire responded.
They extinguished the blaze but 2ha of young plantation had
been burnt. An examination of the scene indicated the fire
might have been deliberately lit.
Detective Sergeant Brett Roberts said Whare Flat Rd was used
extensively on weekends, and members of the public might be
able to assist the police with their inquiries.
Anyone with information was asked to contact Dunedin police
on 471-4800, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800
