It is homecoming of sorts for Mosgiel's top cop.

It has been no secret that Sergeant Kevin Davidson has wanted Mosgiel as a station.

And the reason?

''It is because I live here. I have lived here for 30 years.''

Sgt Davidson, who has spent the past 15 years working as the Youth Aid sergeant in Dunedin, said he was familiar with the Mosgiel area, as his children went to local schools and through his involvement with sporting clubs.

Recent restructuring meant the Mosgiel station moved from a senior sergeant to a sergeant-managed station.

That change gave an opportunity for Sgt Davidson to work in the town, and he will also be responsible for uniformed staff at Mosgiel, Middlemarch, Waikouaiti, Port Chalmers and Portobello.

He was adamant he would not be desk-bound in his new job, and had already pounded the pavement, introducing himself to local businesses.

''The job won't change, as far as I am concerned. Mosgiel has always had a strong community support for policing and we intend to keep it that way.

''The more we can foster and develop that the better.''

It was too soon to comment on any issues facing the area.

''I just want to get get the lie of the land. It has been a while since I have been out here''.

''I just want to have a chat with people and find out their concerns.''

He stressed that the station operated an open door policy and residents were more than welcome to call in to discuss any issue.
