A single vehicle crash on Dunedin's northern motorway yesterday morning is being investigated by police.

Constable Jonathan Wagstaff, of Dunedin, said a Christchurch woman in her late 20s was driving the vehicle north on State Highway 1 when it rolled and ended up on its side in a ditch.

Emergency services were called to the incident, near the intersection of State Highway 1 and Leith Valley Rd, about 8.40am.

The female driver was the sole occupant and no other vehicles were involved.

Const Wagstaff said it was too early to know what caused the crash.

He said the driver was taken by St John ambulance personnel to Dunedin Hospital as a precaution.

''She was checked, X-rayed and discharged.

''I imagine she'll have a few bruises and be a bit sore but otherwise she was not injured,'' he said.

A truck driver was first on the scene and assisted the woman out of the car.

Firefighters also attended the crash.

Const Wagstaff said SH1 was not blocked, and the woman's car was towed away.

''It's probably a write-off.''
