Canoe theft bid left high and dry

Two teenagers were caught up a creek without a paddle last night after allegedly stealing a canoe from Kaikorai Valley College.

Constable Jeremy Buis, of Dunedin, said police were called to Kaikorai Stream about 9pm after a member of the public saw the two 16-year-old males - both pupils of Kaikorai Valley College - with a canoe.

After a short manhunt they were apprehended in Kaikorai Stream ''and pulled out soaking wet'' by police just before 10pm, Const Buis said.

The pair allegedly intended to take the canoe down Kaikorai Stream ''without paddles'', but were instead discovered by a member of the public who followed them and then called police - meaning they never got the canoe in the water.

They were due to be interviewed last night and would be referred to Youth Aid for theft.
