Replica gun confiscated

A 46-year-old man was cautioned by Dunedin police and a toy replica gun was confiscated after a member of the public recently reported seeing a person carrying what appeared to be a pistol.

Sergeant Dave Scott said the initial sighting was made, in Queens Dr at 5pm, on Friday.

Police spoke to the man, who had been on foot, in nearby Meadow St, about 15 minutes later.

Care needed to be taken about carrying replica guns in public, because they looked like real firearms and could cause concern if seen by members of the public, Sgt Scott said.

Such sightings also resulted in call-outs for the police, who had to take all such reports seriously, he said.
