The wheelchair-bound woman whose car was stolen while she was in hospital is grateful for offers to repair the windows of her damaged vehicle.
The Otago Daily Times reported yesterday on the plight of Carole Wiffen (68), whose uninsured Toyota Spacio was allegedly stolen by a man after he dropped her off at Dunedin Hospital.
The Dunedin man faces five criminal charges, and the likelihood of more, after police allege he was involved in a 48-hour, 1200km joyride involving two cars. Miss Wiffen's car, reportedly with all its windows smashed, remained in Omarama.
Miss Wiffen said she was ''overwhelmed'' by an offer from City Auto Glass to replace her windows.
''It is just so kind,'' she said.
The City Auto Glass manager, Graeme Riddle, said he was saddened to read of Miss Wiffen's plight and decided to contact her to see what he could do.
He had contacted the Omarama garage, where the car is being stored, to see if it was ''economical to repair'' the car.
If it was, he had arranged with Reilly's Towage and Salvage Ltd to collect the car when it was next in Omarama.
Once the car was back in Dunedin, his company would install replacement windows. A 22-year-old unemployed man is expected to appear in the Dunedin District Court next month.
