Vote for charities to get cash support

The community groups At Heart Otago, Dunedin LandSAR, Child Cancer Foundation and St John Taieri are set to receive a stake of $4000 from Z Mosgiel.

But how much of stake depends on how popular they are.

Customers of Z Mosgiel can vote for their favourite group when they shop at Z between March 1 and 31.

Z is giving away $1 million throughout the country through its ''Good in the Hood'' programme.

Each station is getting $4000 to give away to four groups and a further $1000 per station has been set aside for each to support other neighbourhood projects and initiatives throughout the year.

The criteria that the groups needed to fulfil to apply for that funding are: being active in the local neighbourhood around a specific Z station; being focused on helping people who need it, and being for a specific project or to fulfil a specific need.

Local Z retailer, Jonathan Usher, said it was challenging to narrow down the applications received for Z Mosgiel to just four organisations.

''We received 25 applications for Z Mosgiel, and every single one of those organisations is doing great things in Mosgiel.

"We struggled to narrow it down to just four, but we believe the groups we've chosen to support this year will continue to make a real difference in the lives of people who need that bit of extra support.''

Each group would also be in line to receive even more funding if they were one of the 10 groups nationally who received the most votes in an online competition on Z's website.
