The candles are set to be blown out as funding is approved for solar lighting at the Leaning Lodge hut.

Strath Taieri Community Board chairman Barry Williams said the board was unanimous in approving $1000 to fund the installation of solar lighting at Leaning Lodge hut in Rock and Pillar Conservation Park.

Leaning Lodge Trust chairman Alan Thomson said the $1000 funding from the board was splendid.

''Solar lighting will reduce the risk of fire as candles do not need to be used.''

Candles on window ledges could also cracked cold glass, he said.

The hut's location 1200m above sea level would make access a challenge for an installation crew, he said.

The hut was wired and the $2200 of solar panels and batteries would be installed before the newly-refurbished hut was officially opened on March 8, Mr Thomson said.
